Less a metal album than an elegant five-part suite of epic songs, A DISEASE FOR THE AGES is another step forward for Irish doom prophets Mourning Beloveth. Like many bands that fall into the doom category, Mourning Beloveth prefer to lay their guitars down in slowly overlapping layers of thick sonic molasses. The colossal riffs come with the repetition and inevitability of ocean waves, and the drums tick down the time left until the apocalypse. Opener “The Sickness” is a cathedral-sized chronicle of gradual destruction that sets the tone perfectly for the album to follow. Definitely not music for a spring picnic.
