A fine singer from the swing era who was active up until her death in the 1990s, Thelma Carpenter recorded much less as a leader through the years than one would hope. Fortunately, this CD is fairly definitive and quite entertaining. The bulk of the selections are taken from Ms. Carpenter's appearance on the pilot program of the radio series Alec Wilder and Friends. Backed by piaist Loonis McGlohon's trio, she sounds in excellent form on such numbers as "How About You," "I'm Just Wild About Harry," "Taking a Chance on Love," and "But Not for Me." Between songs, Alec Wilder, Loonis McGlohon, and Thelma Carpenter often discuss songs, and many of their comments are quite interesting. In addition, the singer is heard on nine selections from a 1970 duet session with pianist Ellis Larkins that was never released before, including "If You Could See Me Now" and "For All We Know." Recommended.
