The always fascinating French duo Elend create stormy, neoclassical goth-scapes in various shades of grey, supported by the occasional piercing soprano and the excellent musicianship of a chamber orchestra. Their seventh album, released in 2007, is the coup de grace of their compelling Winds Cycle trilogy. With pieces like "Waves of Blood," "I Touched the Borders of Death," and "I Gathered Your Members," it would be unwise to expect a good-time party record, but for mood-making intensity, Elend are the best.
