Aether is one of Robert Scott Thompson's lesser-known works. Thompson added a new wrinkle to his psychoacoustic repertoire for this CD. There is a very subtle yet highly essential rhythm in this effort. It is essential because it drives a tribal overtone that is also subtle. The nature of the tribal overtone is unique. The tribes from which Thompson gathered inspiration are not typically referenced as tribes. Thompson reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out a Celtic influence again. The overtone comes more from the rhythms and structures than from the music itself. The symphonic undertones bear some similarities, however vague, to traditional Celtic music. The soft rhythms are not traditional Celtic rhythms either. The rhythms and textures are reminiscent of a Celtic theme. Thompson surrounds that theme with expansive atmospheres and deep minimalism. That structure sets this CD apart from the Celtic genre and drives the set to loftier heights. This is a very important statement in the development of his holistic integration. Aether is very accessible and extremely listenable, best suited for meditation. It is not Thompson's best effort, but it is a very worthy addition to any ambient collection.
