In a switch from his operatic singing, French baritone
David Serero presents an album of show tunes and popular songs on
All I Care About Is Love, his 2013 release on Disques Dom. Crossing the line between classical and Broadway,
Serero also transcends language barriers by singing in English, French, and Russian, demonstrating his comfort in communicating through melodies and expression, despite a rather heavy accent that sometimes obscures the words. Because his moods range from humorous to theatrical, and his delivery is often jocular in tone, it's possible to overlook
Serero's over-the-top delivery as part of his bon vivant persona. It is difficult, however, to ignore his intonation, which tends to flatten in his upper register, and his vibrato, which widens as he holds pitches at the end of songs. He has particular difficulty delivering the more dramatic numbers, specifically La quête from Man of La Mancha, which is delivered in a style reminiscent of
Charles Aznavour, and Ol' Man River from Show Boat, which has a most peculiar patois due to
Serero's pronunciation. The arrangements and production, also credited to
Serero, are adequate for the presentation, and the sound of the recordings gives him sufficient presence and clarity. ~ Blair Sanderson
