Known for his beautiful tone and impeccable musicianship, trumpeter
Joe Wilder had been a studio musician and a part-time jazz player for over five decades by the time of this recording. He plays well throughout the date, although age has resulted in his tone not being quite as pretty and his chops declining slightly. Still, this swing-oriented set does have its bright moments.
Wilder is featured on duets with pianists
Bill Charlap and
Chris Neville and guitarists
Russell Malone and
Bucky Pizzarelli, in a quintet with tenor saxophonist
Frank Wess, and interacting with cornetist
Warren Vache on "It's You or No One" and "Centerpiece." The music has plenty of spirit and good vibes and will be enjoyed by fans of small-group swing. ~ Scott Yanow
