One of the better Strawberry Alarm Clock compilations available, One Way Records' 1993 ANTHOLOGY starts with the flower-power pop gem "Incense and Peppermints"--famously sung, at the producer's insistence, by a friend of the band who was just hanging out in the studio. From there, ANTHOLOGY goes much deeper into the group's four-album catalogue than most.
Not much the Strawberry Alarm Clock did afterwards sounded like that ultra-commercial first single, but it's fine psychedelic pop, with likeably goofy pseudo-profound lyrics, sturdy melodies, lots of harmonies, and some cool production tricks. ANTHOLOGY concludes with the three-part "Black Butter" suite, an early attempt at progressive rock that not only doesn't suck nearly as much as you'd expect to, it's actually a pretty cool amalgam of breathy vocals and hypnotic organ.
