While better than the banal The Best of the Softones,
At Last has a few high points and numerable death valleys. The original members perform crafty remakes of
the Temptations' "Fading Away, " Al Hudson & the Soul Partners and
the Dells' upbeat "My Life Is So Wonderful,"
the Stylistics' "Ebony Eyes," and a stirring rendition of "At Last" constitute the high points. The valleys are two compositions by Biddu Appaiah and Darin Black, and a waste of space titled "Byron's Spoken Interlude." One of these days, someone's gonna compile a
Softones' album that you won't have to wear out your remote batteries skipping past bland tracks. ~ Andrew Hamilton
