Here's a debut LP that seizes your attention from the first second. This Montreal sextet sings in French (strange that more don't, given it's Quebec), and like seemingly every band there boasts members from familiar groups (
Godspeed You Black Emperor!,
Cursed,
Set Fire to Flames), while sharing the lush hues of
the Dears,
Arcade Fire, and
Stars -- but in a totally different way. The lush organs (Mellotrons??? likely!) swirl, hover, and sometimes shudder straight out of
the Moody Blues circa
Days of Future Passed,
the Rolling Stones' "2000 Light Years from Home," and many other similar psych-pop treasures. Plus there are importunate riffs like
Da Capo Love (see "En Chaine et en Vogue") and
Syd Barrett-era
Pink Floyd, and a Brazilian '60s tropicalia psych and French pop garnish that's oh so sweet (ooh la la), including enticing male and female vocals.
