1991, really? Were Teenage Fanclub not running 20 to 25 years late? Aficionados of great old-fashioned pop musicians, especially ones who began with the letter B (Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds, Big Star), this was the Scots’ stunning second album. It’s packed with inspired guitar-playing that is either intricate and complicated, angry, byrds-esque or nirvana-esque but either way always enhances Norman Blake’s wonderful melodies. Although Teenage Fanclub’s obsession with Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, the two halves of the Big star brain, may still be a little questionable, Bandwagonesque is still an original album. This is especially so at a time when the Pixies, The Stone Roses, Nirvana and My Bloody Valentine were bringing the guitar back to the forefront of the rock community.
