Tshala Muana has one of the loveliest voices of all Zairean women and also the smarts to pick excellent musicians and arrangers - here the arranging is handled by two big name guitarists - Souzy Kasseya and Dino-Vangu. Her newest songs are in a sort of pan-European house style, and two of her songs with Kasseya point in this direction, but this 1988 recording is still heavily African, even down to a cover of "Africa Mokili Mobimba" (a very big hit of the early 60s)! Though normally sniffy about cross-over material, I have to say she does it really well (I think it's her voice). ~ Carl Hoyt
