Altoist
Andy Fusco, a veteran of
Buddy Rich & His Orchestra, sometimes recalls
Lee Konitz or
Jackie McLean in his playing, although he is usually pretty original. This session (comprised of seven standards and three originals by either
Fusco or bassist
John Goldsby) showcases
Fusco with both a quartet and (with the addition of the
John Coltrane-inspired tenor of
Walt Weiskopf) a quintet. The music is primarily straight-ahead and dominated by the saxophonists, although pianist
Renee Rosnes gets in a few good solos, as well. Highlights include "Embraceable You," "Stablemates," "My Old Flame," and "Little Melonae." ~ Scott Yanow
