If Jamison Isaak’s sixth proper full-length as Teen Daze feels imbued with an unusual sense of place, that’s because it is: The Canadian electronic producer spent a year gathering samples and field recordings—at home in the forests of British Columbia and in places like Spain and Portugal—infusing his chiming synths with sounds like rocks being dropped into water. Jamison has gradually been moving from his indie-pop roots toward a style both more original and more enveloping, and Bioluminescence represents his most fully realized sound-world yet: a fertile biodome populated by balmy ambient sketches, laidback downtempo, and dreamy house instrumentals with a Balearic air. It’s not strictly a chill-out affair—“Ocean Floor” wouldn’t sound out of place in a sunrise DJ set—but even at its most upbeat, the overall mood is as relaxed as a hammock in the tropics.
