An hugely influential guitarist/singer who died under mysterious circumstances in 1991, Johnny Thunders was a key player in several big moments in rock music. Born and raised in New York City, he started playing publicly in the late '60s and makes an appearance in the legendary Stones documentary Gimme Shelter. In the early '70s, he was the backbone of the iconic, glammed-out proto-punk band The New York Dolls; after two albums with them, he started The Heartbreakers, touring the U.K. with The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Dammed. He also released a mass of solo albums, live recordings, EPs, and singles, and then his untimely death unleashed a flood of assorted bootlegs. This 11-track collection showcases Thunders' raw but soulful vocals, streetwise songwriting, and blues-influenced guitar work. It was recorded in 1971, when the Dolls were still known as Actress, before David Johansen joined the group. Though the sound quality is admittedly rough, this remains a fantastic time capsule; it'll be infinitely enjoyable to Thunders' legions of fans.
