The second collaboration between Chihei Hatakeyama and Dirk Serries continues down the path the duo traveled on 2016's The Storm of Silence. Hatakeyama has released dozens of albums of glowing, shimmering ambient pieces that resemble comforting aural blankets providing warmth and soul nourishment while it's snowing outside, and are perfect sleep aids, particularly the more drone-heavy releases on his White Paddy Mountain label. Black Frost isn't dissimilar, but Serries (previously known for his long-running dark ambient project vidnaObmana) helps sculpt the pieces into slightly more flowing, wave-like directions. All four tracks feel like calmly paced breathing cycles, with frosty guitar loops continuously ebbing and flowing, concealing subtle melodic elements. "Breen" seems to have the most radiant energy, resembling pure sunshine over the arctic tundra, and then "Frossen Luft" is a glimmering twilight comedown. By the end of the album, all tension should be thoroughly relieved.
