Named after a local bushcare group in frontman Alec Marshall’s hometown of Towradgi, Blue Divers’ eponymous debut album is a study in aqueous, weightless ambient sound that bears little resemblance to its storied origin. In mid-2020, Australian label Bedroom Suck commissioned a series of artists to create albums inspired by their experiences of coronavirus-induced isolation, calling the project Private Eyes. Blue Divers is the first album from the initiative to be released and finds Marshall—formerly of both Hot Palms and Sui Zhen—and his rotating cast of bandmates in a seemingly relaxed mood. There’s an intimate and organic feel to the release. You can hear the sound of fingers on strings as instruments are plucked, which makes it all the more surprising that the entirety of the collaborative process was undertaken online, with the group never coming together in person during the record’s gestation. A weightless album that’s largely percussion-free, Blue Divers is a balm for trying times.
