Pete "Bashful Brother Oswald" Kirby joined
Roy Acuff's Smoky Mountain Boys in January of 1939. His dobro playing and comedic persona were staples of both
Acuff's band and the Grand Ole Opry. On this solo outing from 1972,
Brother Oswald's comedic persona is nowhere to be found, it's just his first-rate dobro mastery on favorites including "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," "Wabash Cannonball," and "Tennessee Waltz." While this Rounder disc is highly recommended for fans, the novice may want to check out his classic recordings with
Acuff before venturing here. ~ Al Campbell
