A sequel to the earlier successful
Brothers album on Summit, this time the two brothers, trumpeter Ken Watters and trombonist
Harry Watters, hijack the rhythm section from the trumpeter's usual working group to produce a nice selection of tunes, mostly alternating among originals and standards by Ken Watters. While there is nothing earth-shattering to be found here, the unusual lineup of two brass and rhythm continues to work well, and the excellent support, particularly from pianist David Marlow and drummer Jay Frederick, plus riveting electric guitar from guest
Tom Wolfe on a couple of numbers, adds to the fun.
Harry Watters continues to impress, with super technique, outstanding range, and a tongue that moves near the speed of light. Ken, who is the nominal leader, has a decent feel for the music, but is a more conventional, though still attractive, performer. In some ways, the duo may remind you of the
Bill Watrous-Danny Stiles small group sessions from the '70s, with its similar instrumentation and concept. ~ Steven Loewy
