In the 50-plus years since
Glenn Miller died, RCA Victor, buoyed by continuing sales, has repackaged his recordings repeatedly. This disc, containing 18 tracks with a running time over 56 minutes, is given over to ballads, with a profusion of titles referring to nighttime and dreaming -- "Moonlight Serenade," "Stairway to the Stars," "When You Wish Upon a Star," "You Stepped Out of a Dream," "I Guess I'll Have to Dream the Rest," "Moonlight Cocktail," "Moonlight Becomes You," and more. The tempo never gets too slow, however, so you can dance in your sleep if you want. The September 1996 remastering eschews sonic cleansing techniques, so that the highs are higher, especially noticeable in the
Miller clarinet-and-saxophones sound, and there are audible crackles as well. ~ William Ruhlmann
