Canudos was a city in Bahia where 25,000 people lived under the spiritual guidance of Antônio Conselheiro, charismatic leader who instituted there a no-class society. It was unsuccessfully battled in bloody encounters by governmental troops for a whole year, when all their 25,000 people were dead (minus one). This fascinating chapter of Brazil History was subject of the homonymous film, and
Gereba, a son of Bahia and a successful composer, was commissioned to write its soundtrack. Sensitive Northeastern music in beautiful compositions with influences of mainstream Southeast kept at a respectable level, the album ranges from delicate songs to energetic maracatus (with the special performance of "Olodum").
