This album, which was apparently
Ives' first to be made available in stereo, offers him running through a variety of folk- and folk-style songs -- some associated with various locales around the world -- generally associated with imbibing spirits, as it were. This is the kind of repertory -- including one song from The Mikado -- that
Ives had been doing for at least two decades, at this point, and he doesn't slacken in his ability to deliver. Some of it would probably be considered politically incorrect today, but in 1959 they took such matters a lot less seriously, and
Ives makes it all work, assuming one can get past some aspects of the repertory. And it might be worth owning just for the conceptual cover, depicting
Ives' face on a variety of beer stines, mugs, etc.
