Electronic composer Don Slepian's arrangements of traditional carols is a loving, gentle, and slightly offbeat treatment of the standards. The 1986 date times this album right at the beginning of the sampling era; Slepian used a Mirage Digital Sampling Keyboard. Some tunes (i.e., the guitar renditions of "Deck the Halls" and "O Christmas Tree") are sublime in their simplicity, while others such as "The Holly and the Ivy" include live recorders and emulate the harpsichord of the Renaissance era. "The Divine Infant" features live guitar (in Hawaiian slack-key tuning) and a keyboard arrangement that echoes gently like an organ player at a skating rink. Other sonic surprises are some honky tonk piano sounds and a very unique "Silent Night." Here, the guitar carries the tune while wildly resonant arpeggios run in the background; the sound will probably give your back a massage. Slepian includes two original songs; "Candlelight" paints a picture of snow-laden fields and a romantic, warm house, while "December Waltz" is a carefree piano improvisation. Transfer to CD format would definitely help the sound quality.
