Far more popular in the U.K. than in his native South Africa or the U.S.,
Danny Williams was an accomplished ballad singer whose career is given a strong overview in the form of this disc, originally released in 1997 and then reissued in 2006. The compilation sticks to his early-'60s material and features many of his U.K. hits, including a version of "Moon River" that
Nat King Cole viewed as unsurpassable. (
Cole turned down an opportunity to record the song for that reason.) "White on White," his only charting single in the U.S. -- which, ironically failed to chart in the U.K. -- is also included here. ~ Andy Kellman
