All of the songs on
Color Me Barbra were featured on
Barbra Streisand's second TV special of the same name. (There were some more songs as well, but they had appeared on earlier albums.) It was a strong collection on which
Streisand successfully tackled such standards as
Jerome Kern and
Otto Harbach's "Yesterdays" and Rodgers & Hart's "Where or When," as well as introducing some good new show material in "Where Am I Going?" from Sweet Charity and
Richard Maltby, Jr and
David Shire's "Starting Here, Starting Now," as well as displaying her comedic skills on "The Minute Waltz." The long medley of "face" songs ("Funny Face," "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," etc.) made more sense on TV, where
Streisand sang it to a studio zoo full of animals, but was still enjoyable. The material wasn't all great, with a retread of "Gotta Move" by
Streisand's arranger/conductor
Peter Matz and a couple of French songs looking forward to
Je M'Appelle Barbra among the filler. ~ William Ruhlmann
