On this EP of cover tunes, ex-Mekon Timms reinvents herself as a contemporary folk/country diva capable of interpreting vintage country material in a modern context without fetishizing or condescending to it. She's assisted by Mekons cohort Jon Langford and his band The Waco Brothers, who are more restrained and polite here than on their own recordings. Timms' determined, stoic delivery and folk-rock arrangements occasionally recall the work of Richard and Linda Thompson, but her treatment of chestnuts like "Tennessee Waltz" and "Long Black Veil" makes the songs completely her own.
