Tim Robbins' critically acclaimed film Cradle Will Rock is based on the true story of
Marc Blitzstein's 1937 musical, which was closed by a government injunction for its allegedly anti-capitalist themes and then moved to another theater, where it eventually became a hit. Appropriately, the Cradle Will Rock soundtrack consists of Blitzstein songs performed by the film's stars, who include
Emily Watson, Andrea McDonald, Erin Hall, and
Dan Jenkins, as well as artists like Polly Jean Harvey and
Eddie Vedder. Harvey teams up with
Rob Ellis on "Nickel Under Your Foot," while Vedder duets with Susan Sarandon on "Croon Spoon." Tracks like "Joe Worker," "Let's Do Something," and "Freedom of the Press" capture the film's dynamic, politically conscious tenor. ~ Heather Phares
