There’s something about a good organ trio that can bring a smile to most listeners. This group—led by reedist Craig Yaremko with organist Matt King and drummer Jonathon Peretz—offer up a tricky version of Fats Waller’s “Jitterbug Waltz,” a Latin jazz take on Thelonious Monk’s “Bye-Ya” (one of two guest spots by guitarist Vic Juris), a simmering version of Freddie Hubbard’s “Little Sunflower,” and relatively straight version of Billy Strayhorn’s “Isfahan” with the organ covering nicely for Ellington’s orchestra. But it’s the seven originals here—written by either Yaremko or King—that are the real measure of the band. It’d be a disappointment if this album didn’t have some that B3 gutbucket groove, and the originals “Blue Fontaine” and “Three’s a Crowd” fit the bill nicely. Perhaps the biggest surprise is an original samba by Yaremko that features him on flute—the band charges hard on it, secure in the knowledge that they're onto something. Elsewhere, the trio plunges into the gospel-themed “The Light,” which sources some greasy R&B as well. This is Yaremko’s first album with organ; let’s hope it’s not his last.
