The so-called "flower power" period toward the end of the 1960s was one of the most distinctive in pop history, full of experimentation, ardent hopefulness, and plenty of ultimately clichéd sentiment. This collection captures all of that, but unfortunately the songs here -- with the exception of "Happy Together" and "Elenore" by
the Turtles and "Let's Go to San Francisco" by the Flowerpot Men -- are all re-recorded versions by "one or more members of the original group," which means it's sort of a faux anthology. The rendition of
Joe South's "Games People Play" included here sounds like a live version, while the two
Byrds songs ("Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn! Turn! Turn!") obviously don't have
Roger McGuinn singing. Stick with the originals.
