Massachusetts grind legends A.C. don’t pretend to be anything they’re not. Everything, from the band’s full name to the album’s title, to the crude-beyond-description song titles, points in one direction: contents not for the faint of heart. Originally released as an 11-track EP, DEFENDERS OF THE HATE comes equipped on CD with another 10 tracks culled from compilations and a split 7”. The music, of course, is pure A.C. Shapeless, almost random blast beats, punishingly fast guitars, and Seth Putnam’s scorched, strangled scream all zoom by in a blur of whirring knife-blade carnage, though songs like “Walker, Texas Corpse” feature the occasional breakdown part that slows things to a manageable crawl.
