Fini de rire ! Après The Jacksons et Goin’ Places, deux honnêtes mais pas vraiment bouleversants premiers albums pour leur nouveau label Epic, les Jacksons font à nouveau briller en lettres de feu leur illustre patronyme avec Destiny qui sort en décembre 1978. Exit la paire Kenny Gamble et Leon Huff et sa production disco, les frères contrôlent enfin totalement leur art et c’est une première ! Écriture et production, tout est 100% Jacksons ! Autour d’un groove salvateur souvent très funky, ils abattent sur la table deux singles imparables : Blame It on the Boogie et Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground). Le funk plus que le disco est le carburant de ce disque qui prépare l’avènement du roi Michael (son Off The Wall sortira neuf mois plus tard) et pose les premières pierres du son qui fera son succès futur. Enregistré à Los Angeles avec quelques requins de studio comme les guitaristes Michael Sembello et Paul Jackson, Jr., le batteur Rick Marotta et le claviériste Greg Phillinganes, Destiny impose surtout un gros son, à des années-lumière de celui de Motown. Les seventies ont marqué l’avènement des curseurs montés à fond et des aiguilles des potentiomètres dans le rouge.
