Singer Mike Ferro and his wife, Linda Ferro, were so moved after reading a biography on guitarist Django Reinhardt that they decided to write lyrics to many of his originals. With the exception of "Nuages" (renamed "It's the Bluest Kind of Blues My Baby Sings"), all of the lyrics on this set are by the Ferros; each of the Django tunes were at least slightly renamed. Mike Ferro has a decent and expressive, if not overly strong, voice, doing justice to the timeless songs. Most of the tunes have him joined by guitarist Henry Johnson, bassist Larry Gray, and drummer Phil Gratteau, with a variety of guest musicians popping up on a few songs. Four of the tunes utilize a string quartet and Eddie Johnson's swinging tenor helps out on three numbers, and the closing "At Django's" has three horns getting solo space. This project works quite well, showing off the richness of Django Reinhardt's melodies.
