The gangster in question here is Al Capone and the greatest hits are Italian-American pop classics made famous by
Frank Sinatra,
Dean Martin, and the rest of the original Rat Pack. The versions here aren't the originals though, they're re-recordings courtesy of the Hit Crew. The vocals, however, are very close to the originals, so much so that "Everybody Loves Somebody" could be
Sinatra or
Tony Bennett, but
Gangsters Greatest Hits is more about capturing the essence of the '40s and '50s era than style of any one performer. The originals will always win out over cover versions, but this set does a nice job of capturing the mood. ~ Wade Kergan
