A kind of throwback, Ladyfinger (NE) uphold a niche brand of early-’90s alt-hardcore that came in the wake of bands like Helmet and Quicksand. However, DUSK steers them ever closer toward contemplative melodies and open spaces between clean, pummeling riffs and a pounding rhythm section. On songs like “Little Things” and “Read The Will,” Chris Machmuller’s vocals suddenly seem more kindred with Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke than Page Hamilton. But, for certain, Machmuller and the band maintain their metallic bite, especially on no-nonsense rippers like “Work Party.”
