Both in its music and its graphic design, Ivo Watts-Russell’s 4AD label had one of the most highly curated aesthetics of any indie rock label in history. His side project, This Mortal Coil, helped reinforce the label’s image as a united arts collective; it served as a living clubhouse where various members of the 4AD stable could collaborate on fun covers and idiosyncratic instrumentals. While Watts-Russell eventually compiled the supergroup’s output in a box set, Dust & Guitars is a single-volume collection that includes only the rare and previously unreleased material from that box set. You can trace the project's origins with “Sixteen Days/Gathering Dust,” This Mortal Coil’s first recording, from 1983. The cacophony of those early years eventually gave way to the loveliness of “It’ll End in Tears” and “We Never Danced,” the second of which is a cover of an obscure Neil Young song. While the band never got enough credit for their imaginative attempts at club music (symbolized here by “Drugs”), their naked reading of Big Star’s “Kangaroo” is a timeless moment of despondent pop beauty.
