Although sometimes heard in Dixieland settings, soprano-saxophonist Jim Galloway is a swing stylist at heart. Together with his sextet,
Echoes of Swing is an excellent outlet for his playing. The group plays enthusiastic versions of ten warhorses, some of which are taken by Galloway with just the rhythm section. The leader has a couple rare but effective appearances on baritone sax and even takes a vocal. The playing by the group is pretty spontaneous and, although not completely flawless (there are a couple minor errors), the relaxed music is infectious and fun to experience. Highlights include "Jeepers Creepers," "Christopher Columbus" and a multi-tempo exploration of "Runnin' Wild." ~ Scott Yanow
