To say that Zak Khutoresky a.k.a. DVS1 is a master would be putting it mildly… For two decades, the man who was born in London but who moved to the United States at an early age took his excellence to all four corners of the world, from the clubs of the Midwest where he grew up to Berghain in Berlin (his second home), recording both on Klockworks, Ben Klock’s label, and on Transmat, Derrick May’s label, and also driving his own projects such as Hush and Mistress Recordings… By penning this Fabric mix when he was over forty, Khutoresky offered his virtuosity as a techno DJ, a rather eclectic style that the concerned party said having some difficulty to define. “This mix CD concept was much more difficult to put together than I had imagined… As I don’t do mixes and haven’t released any mixes in over four years, I kept going back and forth in my mind leading up to selecting music about what style and vibe to present confined to the length a CD allows… Most people know me for techno, but I love such a broad range of music and had to find a way to limit myself to have a focus. In the end I decided on a snapshot of a more straightforward focused mix.” The result mostly possesses a rather formidable rhythmic power, and the transitions are clearly the work of very nimble fingers. Just like the tense sections are impeccably measured. We come out of this Fabric 96 in a rather crumpled and upside-down position. In a good way, of course… © MZ/Qobuz
