Fantasy Memorial is an ambitious debut with a breezy summertime feel. Equipped with guitar, bass, keyboards, and drum machines this Brooklyn-based trio puts together a colorful set of intricate yet catchy songs with sunny melodies and sing-along choruses. Featuring tight three-part harmonies set to a variety of Latin and African rhythms, the album rides a playfully exotic groove as the band glides across a wide range of styles. Standouts include the tropical swing of “I Ni Sogoma” and “Vendela Vida,” the infectious guitar figures of “Family Waves” and “Know Your Own Strength,” and the lushly layered “Sleeping In” and “Crossing the Cannon.” The songs are well-constructed and peppered with surprises especially including their clever use of programmed beats, which add texture, as well as snippets of bird songs, children playing, and other found sounds half hidden in the mix. Upbeat and melodic, Fantasy Memorial is a charming and impressive debut.
