Johnny Marr decided to deliver his fourth album, Fever Dreams, as a series of four EPs. Breaking the music up into digestible chunks helps sustain the sense of urgency he had on 2018's Call the Comet, plus it focuses attention on what he's accomplished with these handful of tracks. Here, "Spirit Power and Soul" throbs to a dark, insistent rhythm not far removed from electronic, while "Receiver" ratchets up the neo-disco vibe with a nocturnal throb. "All These Days" is an atmospheric skyscraper that recalls '80s indie even if it has a shimmering modern sheen, and "Ariel" offers a slight sense of sweetness to close out an EP that functions as a good teaser for the full album while also working well as its own mini-LP.
