There is a woozy, fractured bumptiousness to the tracks on guitarist
Mario Delgado's album
Filactera.
Delgado, whose electric style falls somewhere between
John Scofield and
Marc Ribot, leads his group through various funky, soul-jazz-styled romps akin to the quirky works of
Galactic and
Medeski, Martin & Wood.
Delgado has a knack for combining
Bill Frisell-type aural swells with Mississippi country blues, all of which makes
Filactera an extremely well-balanced album. Trombonist Claus Nymark is featured heavily throughout, bringing a kind of New Orleans avant-church style to the tunes. Also exciting is tenor saxophonist Andrej Olejniczak's extended blow over the driving post-bop of "Armadilha Diabolica." ~ Matt Collar
