Fire on Fire's debut five-song EP is somewhat addled, but not off-puttingly eccentric Americana folk (and a good value for a release of this sort, lasting a little more than a half-an-hour). It's rather like hearing campfire Appalachian folk music associated with the dawn of the recording era, but with far better fidelity and a richer assortment of instrumentation and voices. Every single one of the five musicians is a singer and multi-instrumentalist, the arrangements including guitar, accordion, banjo, harmonium, dobro, tamboritza, oud, nay, upright bass, and doumbek. Sometimes that sort of versatility is more flash than substance, but all of the elements are integrated comfortably. The lyrics are far more enigmatic than those on most pre-World War II folk records, though again not in a strained self-conscious way, strewn with allusions to struggle for liberty, betrayal, death, and amnesia.
