Few musicians are as prolific as
Mat Maneri, who seems to be able to pick up his violin on the spot in almost any context and perform endlessly. This is his third and final work (the first two being Fever Bed and
Fifty-One Sorrows) for a trilogy of recordings on Leo Records featuring the understated trio of
Maneri, drummer Ralph Peterson, and bassist
Ed Schuller. Like the others, this one projects a certain melancholy hue, though it also shares an endlessly imaginative spirit and a playful if subdued atmosphere. Too, there are splendid technical skills showcased, as
Maneri, in particular, quietly evinces varied emotions. The violinist fastidiously crafts a unique elastic sound that often uses several strings simultaneously. The trio performs cohesively and seamlessly as a unit, and if fireworks are missing it is because the chosen music is not conducive to pompous displays or grandstanding. Yet
Maneri's lengthy solos are sui generis, stamping an individual creative voice that is instantly recognizable.
Schuller seems to produce some of his best work with
Maneri, and those fond of
Schuller's bass may wish to acquire all three recordings in the series but especially this last one. Peterson's subtle and unobtrusive role on percussion adds a chamber-like ambience to a stellar recording. ~ Steven Loewy
