Van Konvicted wist Akon twee nummer 1-hits en een nummer 2-hit te lanceren. Het kan hem dus niet kwalijk genomen worden dat hij op zijn derde album dezelfde trucjes uithaalt. Toch verschilt Freedom van zijn normale werk: Akon maakt hierop het soort switch dat gewoonlijk gemaakt wordt wanneer een artiest creatief en commercieel op een dood spoor zit. Hiphop en R&B zijn vrijwel helemaal geschrapt, in plaats daarvan zijn de nummers gedrenkt in het glanzende synthesizergeluid en de springerige dancebeats van Europop. Akon klinkt meer op zijn gemak dan verwacht en hij minimaliseert de hitsigheid en geeft meer ruimte aan smachten en ontzag. Soms inspireert de slappe achtergrondmuziek Akon niet tot het schrijven van sterke teksten, desalniettemin is de plaat charmanter dan verwacht.
