ALBUM

Rebecca Ferguson overcame a bout with depression to make her second album, the follow-up to 2011's U.K.-double-platinum Heaven. Unsurprisingly, Freedom concerns a triumphant level of resilience, exemplified by the thunderous "We'll Be Fine," in which the singer and songwriter proclaims, "Sometimes we get lost while walking through the fire/And when it all turns to dust, we'll watch the ashes light up, then we'll rise." A little less R&B-rooted than her debut, Freedom brims with forthright confidence emboldened by productions that seem large even when built around acoustic piano and guitar. There are many basic personal growth sentiments -- "I choose you, I choose happiness," "The storm surrounds you but you're always shining through" -- but they're delivered with an undeniably high level of conviction. More importantly, Ferguson's voice has grace and authority to spare, and sophisticated hooks tend to arrive whenever the material verges on overblown and maudlin. John Legend, an ideal duet partner, appears on the ballad "Bridges," a highlight.
