For Brooklyn-based
Zachary Shigeto Saginaw, “full circle” entails growing up on early Ghostly International releases --
Dabrye’s left-field hip-hop classic
One/Three, most evidently -- and developing his skill to the point where the label has released his work.
Full Circle follows a handful of EPs on Moodgadget and Ghostly, and it deals in crisp, complex constructions that incorporate layer upon layer of sound over off-center beats. This is modern, melodic IDM -- home-listening electronic music that pulls from ambient techno, hip-hop, and the more challenging end of dubstep. Even at its most detailed and least predictable -- as on “Escape from the Incubator,” a mini-symphony of gently prodding synth sprites and mystifying percussion --
Full Circle does not sound overstuffed for the sake of showing off. Gorgeous, bent stuff.
