From Puerto Rico, here's another great exponent of "mountain music" (musica jibara). Peter Watrous favorably reviewed this album in the New York Times: "In 1963 German Rosario, a hill-country singer, put together a small masterpiece of an album using a few stringed instruments, a clarinet and a handful of drums. The album exudes delicacy. Cultures clash: the Spanish tradition (with inflections of flamenco) comes across in the song structures and the topics, which range from severe despair to deathly depression. But the African percussion, the riffs and the improvisation give the music a lightness that makes the contradiction not just palatable, but energizing as well."
