Although a fine trombonist,
Alex Heitlinger's
Green Light is at least as notable for his original compositions. The music is modern jazz that utilizes complex voicings for the three horns. Some of the music is a bit dry but fortunately there are some lighter moments (especially on "Crazy Jake"), changes in grooves (including the fine jazz waltz "Missing You") and a few wild spots, particularly the latter part of "The Foot." The high musicianship and the strong solos by
Heitlinger, trumpeter
Greg Gisbert, saxophonist Peter Sommer and pianist
Art Lande keep the proceedings colorful even if none of the songs are destined to become standards. ~ Scott Yanow
