Salieu Suso is a Mandinka jali from the Gambia, playing an adapted form of the kora, the usual instrument of choice (if not the balofon) for jalis and griots. As with other griots on the Lyrichord label, the main emphasis is placed upon the instrumental beauty of the kora, although the original purpose of the music was simply as a light accompaniment to the songs, which were more important (this is what happens when music in a foreign language is marketed overseas). Despite any loss of vocal work, the music is still wonderful. For anyone curious about West African traditional musics from the jalis and griots, all of the releases on Lyrichord (by Jali Nyama Suso, Lamine Konte, etc.) are probably worthwhile ventures, and this work by Salieu Suso is certainly among them.
