Since the '90s, harmonica virtuoso Chris Turner spends a great deal of time involved in creating theater music in Providence, RI. Prior to that he had a long period of activity out of North Carolina, including membership in the always merry, occasionally downright twisted folk group Nee Ningy Band. Somewhere in there Turner has created several documents of multi-tracked work on his instruments, which include not only all sizes of harmonica from a thumbnail-size piccolino to a car-size chromatic but also mouth harps, bull roarers, flutes, trumpets -- practically anything one can get one's lips around and produce a sound, and he is on the case. Some of these multi-tracked masterpieces were issued only on cassette, but this particular item received a vinyl pressing and is well worth the hunt it would most likely take in order to track down a copy. Material ranges from the simple Marine Band harmonica solo to up to five tracks. Multi-tracking leads to bowls of wet noodles in some cases but Turner really knows to create miniature symphonies, incredibly evocative and cool sounding. He gets a bit of assistance from associates here, but for the most part this is a one-man show, that is if there was a man with five mouths and ten lungs. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
