ALBUM

The National heeft zich allerlei imagos aangemeten sinds hun debuut in 2001 verscheen, maar ze hebben zich nooit kunnen ontdoen van het imago van de stiekem gewelddadige plattelandse boekenwurm uit het Amerikaanse Middenwesten. Het vijfde album van het in Brooklyn gepolijste maar in Ohio opgegroeide indierock kwintet volgt de onverharde weg, waarop cool zelfvertrouwen en wanhoop elkaar ontmoeten, als een doorgewinterde reisleider. En hoewel het even duurt voordat de nummers op gang komen, zijn er voor de geduldige passagiers wel degelijk juweeltjes te ontdekken. High Violet krijgt vorm in "Afraid of Everyone" een langzaam opgebouwd midtempo rocknummer, maar het straffe "Bloodbuzz Ohio" staat centraal op dit album; het refrein (I still owe money to the money, to the money I owe) lijkt betekenisvol en nostalgisch, als een snelwegsong, een soort anti-"Born to Run".
