Hungarian guitarist
Gabor Gado is the leader of
Homeward, brought in all seven selections, and takes a variety of introverted solos. However the most memorable participants are
Gabor Winand (whose haunting vocals are often part of the ensembles) and the tenor players
Mihály Dresch and
Matthieu Donarier. The music swings, does not ignore the innovations of the avant-garde, hints in spots at gypsy and Eastern European folk music (particularly in the use of
Ferenc Kovács' violin), and due to
Winand's voice, often sounds quite unusual while essentially being post-bop jazz. Overall this is an intriguing date from players unknown in the United States that is well worth checking out. ~ Scott Yanow
